Before the influx of multibrand chains like Sephora and Ulta Beauty, there was Space NK. The British retailer, founded in 1993 by beauty entrepreneur Nicky Kinnaird, became known for its selection of cult brands like Eve Lom, By Terry, Malin + Goetz and Diptyque. Although Kinnaird stepped down in 2014, she remains a consultant, and expansion hasn’t stopped. The just-opened stand-alone at the corner of Fillmore and Pine streets carries over 70 unique brands and offers a semiprivate treatment space for makeovers and dry styling. (Before last week, San Francisco residents had leave the city or shop a pared-down boutique in Bloomingdale’s.) Space NK managing director Noah Rosenblatt says it all came down to finding the perfect spot.
