Cutting-edge design sets Genentech

There’s a cool, energy-saving breeze blowing through the newest building on Genentech Inc.’s South San Francisco campus.

And that’s not all.

Since its opening in May 2015, “Building 35” has become a destination for many of Genentech’s 10,000 employees, though the building’s official population is 1,500. The seven-story, 255,000-square-foot building’s large atrium features natural ventilation — no forced air conditioning — and shades adjust automatically. Landings between sets of stairs are called “living rooms,” where employees can kick their feet onto ottomans while working on their laptops.

“People are coming from other buildings,” said Carla Boragno, vice president of site services at Genentech. “We actually see that a lot.”
